Ground Zero worker to be deported

Carlos Cardona from Queens, New York, helped clear the rubble at the World Trade Center after 9/11. He has had major health issues following the work at Ground Zero, inhaling fumes from which impacted his lungs, gastro area, and has had severe psychological issues. After checking in with ICE this February, he was taken into custody earlier this year and is currently being held at a detention center in New Jersey,

Carlos migrated here from Colombia 21 years ago at age 17 to escape violence that killed his two brothers who were police offers. In 1990, he pleaded guilty to a minor offense, allegedly while standing with a friend who was selling drugs.

His wife Liliana is a US Citizen but Carlos’ application is not far enough along although he filed his immigration papers in 2014, shortly after he got married in 2013. His lawyer is now trying to expedite his green card application (based upon his wife’s citizenship) before he gets deported..
